NIH BLUES

(Music and lyrics by David Gilbert; written and first recorded December, 2001)

Well they told me my ideas might not work

A guaranteed project’s all that they’ll support

But I just can’t see their point of view

DottinI’s and crossin’ T’s ain’t what I want to do

Well you’d think that they would want a pioneer

But they’d rather see you stifled from the fear

Worrying about unknown things to come

The only one they want’s the one that’s already been done

Well that kind of science ain’t for me

That stuff should be done in a company

Well I think I’ve figured out what to do

Give ‘em what they already know, give ‘em nothin’ new

Useless information the trendy stuff

Then take the cash, and get on with what you really want to do

Well that kind of science ain’t for me

That stuff should be done in a company

Well this country’s got them NIH Blues

Yeah this country’s got them NIH blues

The science in this country’s got the blues
